Some users reported that they can't delete the Top Categories (black Trash icon), but they are able to delete a Subcategory (red Trash icon)[1].

We tried to do replicate the problem with phpMyFAQ top administrator user and found the same issue.

Is this behavior a security feature or a "bug"?

In first scenario, what is the procedure to delete a Top Category? - only in the database?

Hi,

you cannot delete a top level category if a second level category is present. Otherwise it would break the category tree.

Thank to your quick answer.

There is another cause to the described situation:

• the top category (or another) can't be deleted if it was created by a deleted or blocked user.

In this case, even the phpMyFAQ administrator can't delete that category on the web interface - only on the database.
However making changes on the DB may leave it at an unstable/unbalanced state.

So, a screenshot regarding this situation - an undeletable top category without subcategories and records - should have been present in the first post.

The problem description wasn't good enough.

Imagine this scenario.

1.
1.1

• "User A"
  • creates "Cat01" category ,
  • is the owner of "Cat01" ,
  • is deleted from phpMyFAQ or is at "blocked" state.

1.2

• The system may
  • retain "Cat01" ownership (i.e., "User A"),
    or
  • may shift the ownership to another user ("User B").

• "User B"
  • may or may not have permissions to perform category-related actions ,
  • isn't notified of the automatic change made by the system ,
  • if he doesn't have the correct permissions (and the knowledge to perform the needed actions correctly), the category's status may become undefined (or undeletable).

The first user's impulse regarding a category deletion is to click on the trash icon,
not on the edit button (to see/review/change) the category status and information.

A more descriptive tooltip could be helpful in these situations.

Please take your time to analyze more relevant issues.


Some of our new (and "power") users have less simple questions - regarding this and other issues -, and frequently the information needed to reproduce it is missing.
