I'm running 2.7.8 on a local server. When I view the main page http://localhost:9001/ServerMove/publisher/faq/index.php in IE8, I can view categories and perform searches as expected, although everything is in Italian (it was set up in Italy, so that's not a problem).

Does the upgrade from 2.6.x to 2.7.x involve changes to the database, either the data or the structure?

Thanks for the offer, but the update is being done on a private server so that users aren't affected.

Apologies for the delay. I now have access to the admin area, which returns a blank page. I believe the problem with this is in the "get user rights" section, on the line
$allRights = $user->perm->getAllRightsData();
