Google translation doesn't work?

Post by Dawn »

Hi,

I saw there is an option for google translation in the general options and there is a field for the API key. If I click on it, google tells me that it stopped needing such an API key. But if I don't enter one, google translate isn't active if I switch the language. How can I fix this?

I'm using 2.7.3.

Best regards,
Dawn

Hi,

Google Translate closed it's free service end of 2011. :-(

We're working on switching to Bing Translate.

Thanks for your very fast reply.

Oh, I see.... But Bing translate is also nice. I hope it's possible to translate the entries not only on the fly but also while saving a faq entry. This would be great to create a lot more content.

Will this feature come with 2.8.x or isn't it planned atm?

Hi,

the switch to Bing is planned as soon as possible, maybe with 2.7.5

An automatic translation isn't on our list for 2.8 yet.

Think about this, this will reduce the bandwith a lot. What would be better than autotranslating while saving, would be if the faq save the translation if anybody is using a foreign language (till the original article has changed). What do you think about this proposal:

1. Admin saves/creates faq article
2. Article is available in german
3. Visitor arives at the site and is choosing english as it's language
4. FAQ uses the Bing API to translate it and saves it to the db in the background
5. Another english visitor arives, FAQ can serve the translated content from the DB
6. Main article is changed (the german one)
7. FAQ shows a message about a not up to date translation and gives visitors the ability to click on translate
8. If anybody does this, it uses the API again and saves the latest translation into the db.

I think if you would handle it this way, it would reduce API requests dramatically and provide people a lot of additional content.
