How to add image to header with link

How can I add an image to the header that includes a link to my main website?

Ideally it would span most of the page along the top of the menus but a smaller logo would also be fine. As things are, there is no way to identify the main site or link back t oit.

you can use just plain HTML in the main template file index.tpl
