search terms ... exact search terms ... etc

Post by WSchn123 »

Hi,

I am using version 2.8.1 now for a FAQ board with biblical studies, where quite often searches for verse references such as "1Mo 4" or "Joh 3,16" etc. are required to find articles with certain verses etc When entering Joh 3,16 I do get results for just the "Joh" part (many irrelevant articles included), but would want only the results with the exact match. I could not find any option where I could set an "exact" or at least "all terms", etc ... I tried enclosing the terms in quotes, but that did not really improve the search results as desired ... Perhaps I'm just "a little blind" and don't see what maybe right in front of my eyes?

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Wolfgang

Hi Thorsten

unfortunately, it does not help at all ....
The option of enclosing a phrase in " " which should return the exact value does not work as described ...
(a) in cases of verse references (such as "1Mo 1,26") it returns nothing found (even though there are articles which do contain that reference)
(b) in case like "Johannes der Täufer" it returns 1 article, but marks the occurrences of the word "der" (even when in the middle of words) rather than the exact phrase. (go to starting page http://faq.bibelcenter.de//index.php? and enter "Johannes der Täufer" in search field)
(c) tried "Altes Testament", and the search returned articles with "Testament" ... such as ones, where the "Neues Testament" is actually mentioned and the "Altes Testament" does not even occur ...

It seems to me that the "search" function is somehow not working as one would "intuitively" expect ... and perhaps there needs to be some explanatory text on how to use various available operators "+", "-", "*", " ", etc. to properly do a search ?

Cheers,
Wolfgang

hi Thorsten,

konntest Du zu dem Problem mit der "Such" Funktion schon was finden bzw. zumindest anhand meines Links bei meinen FAQ nachvollziehen, was ich erwähnte?

Hi,
(a) in cases of verse references (such as "1Mo 1,26") it returns nothing found (even though there are articles which do contain that reference)
these are 2 strings, one shorter than the minimum search length for MySQL full text search and a float value. MySQL full text search won't return anything here, we do a fallback to a LIKE search and it'll return the best results from the LIKE query.
Yes, but this is not a search issue, this is an issue in out highlighting code.
(c) tried "Altes Testament", and the search returned articles with "Testament" ... such as ones, where the "Neues Testament" is actually mentioned and the "Altes Testament" does not even occur ...
Yes, it searches for "altes" and/or "testament" as there's no exact string "altes testament" mentioned in any of your FAQs.

We could improve the search by adding support for ElasticSearch or Solr, both based on Lucene. But then these search engines won't run on shared web hostings.
