Customize category page?

Is there a way to customize each category page? For example, we would like to include a "banner" type image on each category page, replacing the text "FAQ in Category" with the image and then put a brief blurb before the list of items. I assume it is possible because of the template engine, but i'm just not sure where to begin in terms of naming and structure.

currently this isn't possible, our template engine isn't so flexible...
