Upgrading from 2.6.17 up to 2.8

Please keep it simple.

I wish to save/keep the contents of my database, and I also wish to retain the look of my pages.

I have tried to get someone knowledgeable to do this, but they are no longer around

I'm running 2.6.17 with a revamped skin (if that's the correct term), and would like to upgrade to 2.8 as I understand the enquiry page can now be formatted

First, can someone advise which files are used to format the look and layout of the pages please?

The next question Is it possible to upload/over-write a batch of files (after removal of the format/layout files) with the new batch of files, or do I need to do something more technical?
