[Request] makeShorterText

Thorsten - would it be possible to make the makeShorterText function use number of characters rather than number of words?

Some FAQ entries can have 8 words but not many more than 30 or so letters. Where other entries can have 8 long words in the theme and so have 40 - 50 characters in it. This is difficult to control the way that the entries wrap in the tables.

Does anyone else have thoughts on this?

this is difficult, just think of the multibyte languages... but I am open minded for good contributions.
