I would like to take a whack at implementing this. Could anyone give me a rundown of how the auth works now in phpmyfaq (variables which are set etc)?

you can check the auth classes in inc/Auth.php and the folder inc/PMF_Auth/. If you like to contribute your code, please fork phpMyFAQ at github (https://github.com/thorsten/phpMyFAQ) and base your code on the 2.7 branch.
