Multisite Instance Path

I am trying to configure multisite. The folders are structured as in the documentation example, with the name of each site under the folder multisite.
so I have a web server root of:
/htdocs/default
and a faq folder structure like :
/htdocs/default/faq/multisite/server1.mydomain.org

My question is: When adding a new multisite, what value should I fill in for "Instance Path"?
If I fill in Instance path with /faq/multisite/server1.mydomain.org, then when I follow the link from the Multisite config screen, I see a directory listing showing constants.php database.php, etc.
Everything else seems to break the multisite, except for the value '/faq', which has missing styles (cant find the style sheet)

So given the folder structure, what value should I use for Instance Path?
